Navigating School Crises: A Roadmap for Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention

Jennifer Hart, School Counselor, APS District Crisis Resource Counselor

School crises can unfold in many forms‒unexpected losses, threats to safety, or mental health emergencies‒and school counselors are often on the front lines. “Navigating School Crises: A Roadmap for Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention” is an interactive session designed to equip school counselors with tools, strategies, and confidence to respond effectively at every stage of a crisis. Participants will explore proactive approaches to crisis prevention, learn how to manage acute incidents with clarity and care, and discover best practices for supporting school communities in the aftermath. This session will also highlight the connection between crisis recovery and suicide prevention, offering practical steps to build more resilient systems at the school level. Attendees will leave with a framework they can adapt to their school, along with reflection tools to inspire long-term, systemic change.
